An interesting abandoned house near Belmont off the Grand Canal in Co. Offaly, Ireland. Along the canal towpath there is a bridge that was built for private access to this large and now derelict house. This is Judge’s bridge and the house was the residence of the Judge family. The house stands on a thin strip of land between the Grand Canal and backs onto the Brosna River.
Previously the house was the residence of the Sheils who gave their name to the local townsland Ballysheil. It is speculated that the Sheils family are the ancestors of US First Lady Michelle Obama.
